Mission Statement and about the National Association of Storm Chasers
and Spotters (NASCAS)TM

The NASCAS was formed in 1999.

The NASCAS's main mission is to provide accurate safety and educational information to the public, educators, media, government officials, students and to those who actually pursue severe weather. With the current influx of new chasers and spotters, it is critical that information and ideas concerning safety and responsibility are a major part of a new chaser's or spotter's learning process.

The NASCAS will not act as a governing body to regulate or certify storm chasing, storm spotters or storm chasers. It is our belief that anyone has the right to pursue or observe weather as long as such activities are done in a responsible and safe manner. The positive impact and benefits of responsible storm chasing and storm spotting are often overlooked.

The NASCAS also provides support for charitable organizations, including the Storm Spotters Emergency Fund, currently under development.

The NASCAS is not a profit generating organization. All funds obtained through our memberships are used to maintain this site, to promote safety, responsible storm chasing and to fund our related charitable and educational projects.

It has been suggested the NASCAS Board be composed of a single representative from the following interests:

  • Hobbyist and amateur chasing
  • Education
  • Media and news chasing
  • The National Weather Service
  • Scientific chasing
  • Law Enforcement
  • Fire Fighting
  • Emergency Medicine
  • Professional Chasing
  • Storm Spotting, e.g., Skywarn
  • Legal and Lobbying (to work with states and local governments who are currently considering anti-chasing legislation,
       e.g., Oklahoma)
  • Technical, e.g., communications and Internet.
  • National Security, e.g., the current federal highway watch program.
  • International representatives from assorted nations including the UK, Canada and Australia.

To apply for the above positions, please read this release to apply.

Modifications to the mission statement will be posted following a board meeting in the fall of 2004.

    Memberships are currently available here.
